You Quit the Steroids for Eczema. Now What? (Topical Steroid Withdrawal?)

You stopped the steroids and everything got worse.

Way worse.

You already knew steroids weren’t a long term answer for eczema and they’d stopped working anyway.

Or, you were worried about side-effects.

So you made a brave, informed decision.

But what no one truly prepared you for…

Was that it could feel far worse than the original eczema ever was.

Topical Steroid Withdrawal, AKA TSW.

The burning.

The pain.

The relentless itching.
The shedding.
Sleep vanishing.

Joy – hard to find.

You thought you were choosing healing.

Instead, you’ve stepped into a nightmare.

And then comes the silence…

No answers.

No roadmap.
No one able to tell you what comes next.

So you go searching online.

Why Watching Other People’s TSW Journeys Feels So Terrifying

You see the timelines.
The “Year 2 update.”
The “Still flaring at 4 years.”
The daily documentation.

And an undercurrent of fear sets in:

“Is this going to be my life now?”

It’s not only the symptoms that scare you.

It’s the idea of losing years of your life to waiting.

When You Ask for Help and Feel Dismissed

Many people reach out to doctors at their lowest point.

And hear things like:

“It’s just your eczema returning.”
“You shouldn’t have stopped the steroids.”
“It’s just your anxiety.”

You’re flaring harder than ever.
Your sleep is gone.
Your skin feels unbearable.

And still, you’re made to feel like you’re imagining it.

That kind of dismissal does not just hurt emotionally.
It makes your body feel even less safe.

Why “Waiting It Out” So Often Feels Helpless

When you’re going through TSW, you’re told some version of this:

• Stop the steroids
• Ride the waves
• Give it time

People don’t follow this path because they’re passive.
They follow it because they are trying to do the right thing.

And no one else has given them options other than cold turkey, NMT (“no moisture therapy”), move countries, and/or “just wait it out.”

But time alone cannot shift the deeper state the body is in.

Many people find themselves caught in the same loop:

The flare eases.
You think, “Maybe this is it!”
Then it returns.
And everything crumbles again.

Not because you’re failing.

But because the system underneath is shaky and unable to support healing.

Yet

TSW does not only affect the skin.

It involves the system that controls:

• inflammation
• immune signalling
• sleep
• temperature regulation
• itch response
• stress hormones

Long term steroid use suppresses natural regulation.

When that support is removed, many bodies swing into full body threat.

And in that state:
• inflammation surges
• itching intensifies
• sleep fragments
• repair slows
• the body stays in survival

You can eat carefully.
Follow every rule.
Avoid every trigger.

And still feel like your skin is on fire.

Not because you are doing anything wrong.

But because the body is still operating in protection mode.

Trying to survive and unable to heal.

👉 Topical Steroid Withdrawal is not just a skin withdrawal.
It is a nervous system withdrawal.

And healing requires nervous system safety.

THIS is the missing piece.

Healing from TSW

You don’t need to fight your body.
You don’t need to prove strength by suffering longer.
You don’t need to live in fear of your next flare.

What matters is the state your body is attempting to heal inside of.

Creating internal safety, clearing the stress patterns that keep the system stuck, and supporting the body back toward regulation. These are all the layers I go go through with with my private clients.

Not forcing timelines.
Not chasing symptoms.
Not overriding your body’s signals.

Your First Step: The Itch Switch

That’s why I created my $7 book, The Itch Switch for adults navigating eczema and TSW who feel exhausted, overwhelmed, and unsupported.

Inside, I show you:

• Why flares feel unpredictable
• How your nervous system controls healing access
• What truly needs to stabilise first
• How to begin shifting your system safely

This is the same foundation I use inside the Happy Skin Method – a grounded, gentle place to start.

Because waiting in fear isn’t your only option.

You didn’t choose TSW (I mean, who would?!)

But you can choose the conditions your body heals inside of.

And that choice shifts everything.
